Rivian Launches Also: A Bold New Vision for Urban EV Mobility
🚗 What Is Also?
Also is a brand-new electric vehicle company developed inside Rivian’s skunkworks team and now spun out as its own entity. Backed by $105 million in Series A funding led by Eclipse Ventures, Also aims to reinvent how we move through cities with smaller, smarter EVs for short-distance trips.
The 70-person team includes experts from Apple, Google, Tesla, Uber, REI Co-Op, and Specialized—bringing a wealth of experience in design, mobility, and technology to this new venture.
🌍 A Smarter Answer for Short Trips
More than 80% of car trips today are under 15 miles. Also aims to address this with purpose-built micromobility EVs that are compact, sustainable, and designed to handle everything from daily errands to last-mile delivery.
As Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe put it: “There’s a seat, two wheels, a screen, a few computers, and a battery.” While coy about exact specs, he hinted that Also’s first vehicle will take a bike-like form factor—likely in the e-bike or electric scooter range.
🧠 Engineered for Affordability and Scale
Unlike most micromobility startups, Also will leverage Rivian’s full technology stack—including power electronics, embedded software, and OS development—to scale faster and lower costs. The goal: to bring Rivian-quality EV tech to a smaller, more accessible vehicle form.
Scaringe noted the high prices of premium e-bikes—often $6K to $10K—reflect a broken supply chain. With Rivian’s backing, Also is positioned to change that with high-quality, lower-cost options.
🤝 Independent but Deeply Connected
While Also operates independently, Rivian holds a minority stake and will provide ongoing support through tech sharing and retail infrastructure. Rivian’s VP of Future Programs, Chris Yu, now serves as president of Also, and Scaringe will sit on its board.
The startup is already in talks with global partners to launch commercial-use models, particularly for parcel and food delivery in dense metro areas like Europe.
🚀 What’s Next
Also’s first flagship product will debut later this year, with production slated for 2026 in the U.S. and Europe. Future expansion is already planned for Asia and South America. While the product lineup remains under wraps, Also has hinted at multiple form factors—even teasing the idea of an electric rickshaw.
One thing’s clear: Rivian isn’t just building trucks anymore. With Also, it’s building a movement.
