Rivian Expands Illinois Facility to Build the R2

🏭 Building for the Future

Rivian has broken ground on a major expansion at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois. This 1.1 million square foot addition will support the production of the R2, Rivian’s next-generation electric SUV.

🦾 A Highly Automated Body Shop

The expansion will include a new, highly automated body shop tailored specifically for R2 production. This facility will help streamline assembly and improve efficiency in building the vehicle.

🔧 Increased Vertical Integration

In addition to the body shop, the new space will house stamping and plastic injection molding operations. These upgrades will allow more of the R2’s components to be made in-house, simplifying logistics and enhancing production speed.

🛠️ Construction Timeline

Construction is underway and expected to continue throughout 2025. Rivian is preparing the site for major equipment installation, including new robotics and automation infrastructure.

📦 Production Plans

The expanded space is a key step in Rivian’s plan to begin building the R2 at its Normal facility. The company shared that R2 deliveries are expected to begin in the first half of 2026.
